Emile Learning, a one-on-one blended learning platform, announced that it has rebranded to Subject, as the company believes it reinforces its commitment to provide access to opportunities. In conjunction with the name change, Subject raised USD 29.4 million in a Series A funding round led by Owl Ventures with participation from existing investors Kleiner Perkins and SoftBank Group. The round follows its USD 3 million seed round in May 2021, bringing its total funding to USD 34.7 million. Additionally, Tory Patterson (managing director and co-founder, Owl Ventures) will join Subject’s board.

 • The company intends to use the funds for product development and market expansion.

 • The company also reported that, since its fundraise in May 2021, its headcount has increased to 75 from five across its offices in Los Angeles and Seattle (the second HQ opened during the same period).

 • The platform features 1) accredited learning content, advanced placement, and elective offerings; 2) video content; 3) support service for learners and to assist educators; and 4) analytics and insights for educators. It has partnered with 70+ schools and districts across the US, including Merced Union High School District and Jefferson County School District.
