Square Roots (previously Square Roots Urban Growers), a hydroponic vertical farming startup, has partnered with URB-E, a Los-Angeles-based last-mile delivery startup offering a delivery solution that combines an electric scooter with a portable container, for the delivery of the former’s produce to retail stores in New York.
Square Roots has deployed URB-E’s delivery fleet at its Brooklyn farm and has been using it since December 2021.
Using URB-E’s delivery solution, Square Roots can reportedly benefit from faster loading and unloading times, better weather protection, and reduced congestion during travel. This solution is also carbon emission-free.

Analyst QuickTake: This announcement follows Square Roots’ announcement of its fourth and largest farm in its network in January this year amidst rising demand for its vertically produced greens and herbs. With the new partnership, the company is looking to strengthen its presence across the US and increase access to its vertically grown produce. As of March 2022, Square Roots operates around 20 container farms that supply to over 250 stores across the US, which include popular names such as Whole Foods Market, Fresh Direct, and Meijer.
