Google acquires MicroLED display startup Raxium to develop new hardware

M&A

  • Google announced the acquisition of MicroLED display manufacturer Raxium. The terms of the deal were not disclosed but reports by The Information suggest that the deal values the target at USD 1 billion.

  • Raxium, a 5-year old startup, focuses on MicroLED displays for AR and VR applications. The company is reported to have achieved better performance for R, G, and B MicroLEDs with minimum efficiency loss. This is imperative in the development of AR hardware, which requires a combination of high resolution, brightness, and contrast.

  • Analyst QuickTake: The acquisition signals Google's ambitions in the AR hardware market. This follows a January 2022 announcement that it is developing a new AR headset (codenamed Project Iris) to be launched in 2024. AR glasses were also reported to be in the pipeline, fueled by Google's acquisition of Canadian waveguide developer “North” in June 2020. Its waveguide technology, which is a display conducive to AR glasses, could see Google have another crack at an improved version of the consumer-directed Google Glass.
