GM to develop Level 3 automated driving systems

Product updates

  • General Motors is developing a hands-free, eyes-off driving system, also known as a Level 3 automated driving system. This advancement builds upon its existing “Super Cruise” advanced driver assistance system, which currently allows for hands-free driving but still requires drivers to keep their eyes on the road (Level 2).

  • The proposed Level 3 system would be hands-free, eyes-off driving under certain conditions, typically on highways and at reduced speeds.

  • It uses LiDAR map data, high-precision GPS, cameras, radar sensors, and a driver-attention system to monitor the person behind the wheel.

  • Analyst QuickTake: Level 3 autonomous driving allows drivers to focus on other tasks but is limited to specific roads and states due to technical and regulatory challenges. Today, Mercedes-Benz is the only automaker to offer Level 3 limited hands-off, eyes-off driving systems in the US (in California and Nevada).
