Space-based data provider Spire Global and thermal intelligence company OroraTech have partnered on a NASA contract to develop wildfire monitoring capabilities.
The partnership will develop a low-cost orbital solution for monitoring wildfire-prone areas in the US, combining Spire's space and ground systems expertise with OroraTech's thermal infrared sensing technology. The companies also plan to launch OroraTech's next eight wildfire-detecting satellites (OTC-P1) no earlier than 2025, creating what they claimed would be the largest constellation dedicated to wildfire monitoring.
This collaboration builds on their existing relationship . OroraTech already operates thermal infrared sensors on Spire-built satellites and received a previous contract from the Canadian Space Agency for wildfire monitoring constellation development in May 2023 .
Analyst QuickTake: Spire Global and Ororatech also partnered in June 2023 to develop an eight-satellite constellation for global temperature monitoring, which included applications such as tracking and monitoring wildfires.
