Karana is a Singaporean startup producing plant-based meat alternatives using jackfruit. The startup uses a proprietary mechanical technique to process jackfruit and transform it into a pork substitute. Karana claims this method creates a texture close to minced and shredded pork.
Karana’s portfolio includes potstickers, ground meat, jackfruit burger, jackfruit breakfast sausage, and Italian jackfruit sausage, which it supplies to food service outlets in Singapore, the US , and Hong Kong.
Key customers and partnerships
In May 2021, Karana collaborated with Hong Kong chefs, Shane Osborn of Arcane and Manav Tuli of Chaat, to debut its brand in Hong Kong by the end of 2021.
Funding and financials
In its latest funding round in July 2020, Karana raised USD 1.7 million in a seed funding round led by Big Idea Ventures and the CEO of Monde Nissin Corp, Henry Soesanto. The startup plans to utilize the funding to launch its first range of plant-based meat and dim sum products in Singapore and accelerate its R&D capabilities. The startup also had an undisclosed pre-Series A round before its launch in the US.
