SweGreen is a Swedish AgTech company that provides automated in-store vertical farming solutions to produce lettuce, leafy greens, herbs, and spices. SweGreen uses AI-driven farm management systems, cloud-based monitoring, and automated hardware platforms to run its systems in an indoor setup, reducing transport charges and last-mile delivery systems.

The company offers three types of vertical farming units, depending on size: Freja, designed for large supermarkets and retailers, with a daily production capacity of approximately 450 crops (around 13,500 per month) within a compact 60 sq m area; Elsa, with a 45 sq m footprint, has a daily production capacity of around 300 crops (around 9,000 per month); and Saga, its newest and smallest model for smaller grocery stores, hotels, and eateries, has a floor space ranging 6–12 sq m, delivering 68–116 crops daily.

The company also operates its own research center and laboratory, Swegreen X, where new leafy greens are developed and tested.

SweGreen claims to use 99% less water than traditional farming methods and recycles all irrigation water at its facilities.

Key customers and partnerships

As of October 2023, SweGreen’s customers included Vattenfall and Ostenssons.

In August 2023, the company partnered with EDEKA, a German supermarket corporation and its merchants Stadler + Honner to establish an in-store facility in Munich, Germany. In May 2023, Swegreen partnered with ICA Kvantum Emporia in Malmö to install an in-store farm. As of December 2023, the company’s in-store farms were located in over 15 stores.

The company works with the Research Institutes of Sweden and the Malardales University to keep its AI technology up to date.

Funding and financials

In October 2022, Swegreen received EUR 40,000 (~USD 44,000) from the Nordic Project Fund (Nopef) to support its international expansion, with a focus on the American market.

SweGreen raised USD 1 million in funding in November 2020 from Vinnova to further develop Swegreens’ platform for AI-driven vertical farming.
