Paris-based Alice & Bob aims to build the first universal quantum computer using the superconducting qubit technology. The company focuses on developing fault-tolerant quantum computers using its unique cat qubit technology, which is inherently protected from certain types of errors, specifically bit-flips. The company claims its qubits have been engineered to be intrinsically insensitive to one of the two types of possible quantum errors with the first prototype having reduced the number of errors by a factor of 300. It believes it can produce a fully fault-tolerant operational quantum computer by 2027 (as opposed to the 10 years currently predicted).

Key customers and partnerships

In the recent past, Alice & Bob entered into several partnerships. These include collaborations with

1) NVIDIA in March 2024 to incorporate cat qubits into future data centers

2) Classiq in March 2024 to achieve fault-tolerant quantum computing by integrating Alice & Bob's cat qubit technology into Classiq's platform

3) National Institute for Research in Digital Science and Technology (Inria) (January 2024) to improve quantum computer efficiency by using new error correction architecture with Cat Qubits and low-density parity-check (LDPC) codes

4) OVHcloud (November 2023) to launch Felis, the first quantum emulator with the ability to predict behavior of logical qubits to the public via the OVHcloud Public Cloud platform

5) Equinix (November 2023) to expand access to quantum technology worldwide

Funding and financials

In March 2024 , Alice & BobAlice & Bob, in partnership with academic researchers from ENS de Lyon and Mines Paris-PSL, secured a EUR 16.5 million (USD 17.8 million) grant from Bpifrance, as part of the French Government's France 2030 scheme. The proceeds were allocated for the Cat Factory project that aims to develop a 100-logical-qubit processor with an optimized and lower-cost architecture for fault-tolerant quantum computing by 2027, using Cat qubit technology.
