Cengage provides content, technology, and research solutions for the global higher education, K-12, professional, library, and workforce training markets. The company’s history can be traced back to 1979 when the Thomson Organization entered the publishing business through the acquisition of Wadsworth Publishing and was reorganized to form International Thomson Organization. Following several acquisitions and a restructuring, the company was acquired by a private equity consortium in 2007 and its name was changed to Cengage Learning. In 2016, Cengage Learning was rebranded as Cengage.

Cengage’s Learning segment provides a variety of digital and print content and associated services for the higher education, K-12, and professional skills markets. The company’s Gale segment offers research and learning platforms to libraries and publishes original content, primary source archives, and aggregated periodicals for academic institutions and businesses. The International segment provides academic educational solutions and English language training products, among other services.

Cengage's Online Skills business, Ed2go, provides online instructor-facilitated courses and career training programs for adult learners. Ed2go has a catalog of more than 600 offerings and a network of more than 2,100 colleges and universities. In September 2020, Cengage announced plans to expand its Online Skills business to include dedicated research and development (R&D) that will work directly with students, employers, and educators to support learner-driven innovation.

In January 2022, the company entered into an agreement to acquire Infosec, a security education provider, for USD 190.8 million. Infosec’s cybersecurity training platform for IT security professionals will be combined with Cengage’s online education programs (Ed2go), with the acquisition marking Cengage’s entry into the cybersecurity training space.
