Based in India, PHOOL.CO (also known as Kanpur FlowerCycling Pvt. Ltd.) has developed a leather material named “Fleather,” made from recycled flower petals collected from flower waste at temples in India. The company claims to collect 8.4 tons of flower waste daily from temples to be used as raw material for the leather. The technology for producing bioleather material involves the cultivation of microorganisms on flower petals. The breathable fabric can be produced in various tensile strengths.
After two years of development, the material was in the final phase of research and development (R&D) as of September 2020, with plans to commercialize the material soon. As of October 2020, the company produced 1,200 sq. ft. of Fleather per day, where 4 sq. ft. of Fleather is produced using 400 grams of flower. PHOOL.CO claims that luxury brands in Europe have shown interest in Fleather, and the material can be used across products, including bags, jackets, upholstery, and other decorative items.
In addition to Fleather, the company also produces a packaging solution named Florafoam to replace styrofoam. The material is said to be biodegradable, fire-resistant, and customizable in terms of shape, size, and strength.
In August 2020, the company raised USD 1.4 million in pre-Series A funding led by IAN Fund and the San Francisco-based Draper Richards Kaplan Foundation.
