Verana Health is a clinical data analytics company that offers AI and machine learning-based data platforms focused on supporting pharmaceutical companies and drug developers by providing data-driven insights across medical areas such as neurology, urology, and ophthalmology. 

The company has two flagship products: 1) VeraQ, a population health data engine that gathers unstructured medical data to generate insights; 2) Qdata, a database of curated clinical data derived from VeraQ. 

Key customers and partnerships

The company gathers medical data from patient registries and electronic health record (EHR) notes via its partnerships with various medical associations and societies including the American Academy of Ophthalmology, the American Academy of Neurology, and the American Urological Association. The data is then used to generate insights that assist pharma companies to expedite their drug development process, as well as save costs. 

The company reports that it is working together with various multinational pharma companies and emerging biotechs, although names have not been disclosed. Furthermore, as of March 2024, it had over 20,000 clinicians in its data network. 

Funding and financials

Founded in 2008 as DigiSight Technologies, the company rebranded to Verana Health in 2018 with the backing of GV (formerly Google Ventures). In its latest Series E funding round in January 2022 , Verana raised USD 150 million led by Johnson & Johnson Innovation and Novo Growth. The funds were used to enhance the company’s product offerings and its data network and pursue new clinical data partnerships.
