Bayer (XETR: BAYN), also known as Bayer AG, is a Germany-based global pharmaceutical and biotechnology company that operates in 83 countries. It is known to be one of the largest pharmaceutical companies in the world and is the developer of the anti-inflammatory drug, Aspirin. Bayer generated EUR 47.6 billion (USD 52.1 billion) in total revenue in 2023.
Bayer operates three primary reportable segments: Crop Science, focusing on digital farming, crop protection, and traits and seeds; Pharmaceuticals, which develops and produces prescription products and specialty therapeutics; and Consumer Health, engaged in the supply of nonprescription over-the-counter medicines and other products, such as medicated skincare and nutritional supplements. Crop Science was the largest segment, accounting for ~49% of total revenue in 2023.
Bayer’s geographical segments are divided into four regions: North America (~34% of total revenue), Europe/Middle East/Africa (~30%), Asia/Pacific (~18%), and Latin America (~19%). Bayer announced structural changes to be made by the end of 2024, with the removal of multiple layers of management and coordination while also considering the separation of Crop Science or Consumer Health into separate businesses. The company committed to becoming climate-neutral in its own operations by 2030 and reducing greenhouse gas emissions by at least 12.3% along the downstream and upstream value chain by 2029 (from a 2019 baseline).
