Founded in 2001 by Martin Dougiamas, Moodle is headquartered in Perth, Australia. The company launched a free and open-source LMS in 2002 for use in blended learning, distance education, flipped classroom, and other e-learning projects by schools, universities, workplaces and other sectors. Moodle is used to create private websites with online courses for educators and trainers to achieve learning goals. Moodle is currently used in more than 230 countries and is supported by a global network of certified Moodle Partners. Used by K-12 and higher education institutions as well as corporations, Moodle had more than 250 million registered users worldwide as of April 2021.
In August 2021, Moodle acquired US-based Moodle Partner companies My Learning Consultants, Moonami Learning Solutions, and Elearning Experts, and will merge them to form one services company, Moodle US. With the formation of Moodle US, North American clients will be able to access a wide range of services directly from Moodle. More recently, in December 2022, the firm acquired eAbyas, an Indian online education platform provider, to give Moodle technical expertise in the development and provision of services including implementation, integration, and content hosting for the international market, as well as access to the EdTech sector in India. The business added that it planned to expand its staff in India to 400 in the next two years. Subsequently, in March 2023, Moodle launched its Indian subsidiary, "Moodle India," in Hyderabad, which is expected to generate a revenue growth rate of 30%–40% YoY over the next two to three years.
Key customers and partnerships
In April 2021, Moodle partnered with Brickfield Education Labs, a toolkit provider, for Moodle users to improve content accessibility. The partnership will help reduce barriers to content accessibility within the Moodle LMS by ensuring content uploaded by educators and learners meet standard accessibility requirements.
