Based in Switzerland, Bananatex develops a durable, waterproof fabric using Abacá plant (a member of the banana family), which can be used across products such as furniture, bags, and footwear. The company operates in partnership with Swiss bag brand QWSTION, a Taiwanese yarn specialist, and a weaving partner. The Bananatex material has been used to create bags (roll pack and hip pouch) under the QWSTION brand and furniture (MAE chair) in collaboration with German design studio PALAIUS.
In April 2021, the company partnered with the UK-based footwear brand Good News to make sneakers in collaboration with H&M. The company has also partnered with homeware brand Magazin and the Danish furniture brand Softline to create furniture (KOLTER ECO daybed).
In February 2022 , Bananatex, along with Ananas Anam and Brazilian fashion company Regenerate Fashion collaborated to form the “FIBRAL Material Alliance” to promote the use of bio-based materials. FIBRAL will create an international and unified platform for all plant-based fibers made from materials including pineapple leaves, hemp, abaca, and agricultural waste by bringing together companies that work with both synthetic and bio-based materials.
