Kelpi, based in England, is a biotech company that creates biopolymers from seaweed to create bioplastics for compostable food packaging. As a result, the company claims that each piece of packaging reduces fossil fuel demand and carbon dioxide emissions. According to the company, its bioplastic technology is marine-safe, carbon-neutral, and resistant to water, oxygen, grease, and acid.
Kelpi is currently leading a collaborative R&D project to create a specialist compostable bioplastic film with a strong oxygen barrier that outperforms fossil fuel plastics even in boiling water at high pressure.
In May 2024, the company announced plans for a commercial launch of its packaging by mid-2025.
Key customers and partnerships
In March 2021, the company collaborated with the University of Bath to leverage research facilities and expertise to accelerate the testing of its biopolymer composite materials. In addition, the company works closely with Innovate UK, the HM Government, EU European Regional Development Fund, and the West of England Combined Authority.
Funding and financials
In February 2023, the company raised more than GBP 3 million (~USD 3.7 million), led by Science Creates Ventures and Green Angel Syndicate, to conduct manufacturing pilots for its proprietary coatings for paper and cards. The round includes a GBP 665,000 grant funding from Innovate UK’s Combined Investor Partnership. In May 2024, the company raised GBP 4.3 million (~USD 5.5 million) to scale up operations.
