Consensus is a search engine designed to facilitate scientific research by providing instant access to insights from over 200 million peer-reviewed academic papers. The platform uses advanced AI, including GPT-4, to extract, aggregate, and distill information, allowing users to find relevant scientific data and generate citations. Consensus aims to democratize access to expert knowledge, making complex scientific research more approachable and efficient for a broad audience, including researchers, students, clinicians, and other professionals.

In February 2024, the company launched Consensus Copilot that can complete a variety of different research tasks and provide answers in a variety of formats.

As of May 2024, the platform was utilized by over 1 million individuals from the research community and other professional domains, including University of Virginia, Harvard University, Northwestern University, IEEE, Johnson & Johnson, McKinsey, and Merck.

In September 2022, the company partnered with 1) Semantic Scholar to create an innovative research experience for users; 2) SciScore to help its users better understand the quality of their search results; 3) Centaur Labs to generate scalable scientific data labels in August 2022; and 4) Datasaur to obtain data annotation services to train models in April 2022.

Funding and financials

Consensus raised USD 3 million in a seed funding round in April 2023 led by Draper Associates to further enhance its search engine capabilities.
