Space Machines Company (SMC) is an Australian space-tech company, providing in-orbital transportation and logistical services. The company aims to create a transportation network in space enabling in-space mobility to varying orbits including near-Earth and deep-space. SMC’s flagship space mobility platform–Optimus–is powered using its scalable spacecraft and includes modular interfaces and flexible configurations to cater to a variety of customers from commercial to government.

SMC’s portfolio of services include constellation deployment, satellite servicing (refueling, life extension services, de-orbiting, repairing, inclination adjustments), last-mile space cargo delivery, and space exploration. The company had its first Optimus launch in March 2024, aboard a SpaceX Transporter 10-mission to low-Earth orbit (LEO). The mission carried several payloads, including a navigation system from Advanced Navigation, a space domain awareness camera from HEO Robotics, a hyperspectral camera from Esper, an in-space image processor from Spiral Blue, a network processor from Dandelion, and an AI processor from ANT61.

SMC scheduled its next launch for Optimus in 2026 aboard NewSpace India’s Small Satellite Launch Vehicle (SSLV).

Key customers and partnerships

The company partnered with Australian satellite provider Optus in September 2022 to advance on-orbit spacecraft services in Australia by contributing its spacecraft manufacturing and transportation services expertise. In October 2022, the company signed a memorandum of understanding with leading space launch services provider Arianespace to study available options and ensure compatibility of SMC orbital transfer vehicles and launchers–which include Ariane 6 and Vega C.

In July 2024, SMC partnered with NewSpace India to launch Optimus aboard NewSpace India’s SSLV in 2026. The company also partnered with Ananth Technologies and Digantara in September 2024 to advance the Space MAITRI mission and launch its second Optimus satellite.
