Cleaner Seas Group

Based in the UK, Cleaner Seas Group is developing a retrofit microfiber filter called “Indikon-1” that can be connected to washing machines to filter microplastic particles from every washing cycle. 

The company claims that Indikon-1 will capture up to 90% of microfibers that are up to 1 micron in size during each wash. Indikon-1 comes with a returnable cartridge that can be used for approximately 100 washes after which a light indicates that it needs to be returned. The company provides its filters with a spare cartridge and collects used ones to refurbish and reuse them. The company claims to prevent up to 700,000 microplastic particles from entering water bodies per wash. As of October 2022, the company had not yet commercialized its solution.

Funding and financials

In September 2022 , the company raised GBP 700,000 from a crowdfunding campaign on CrowdCube, which was expected to be used to expand the company’s sales team. The company also announced that it aims to generate GBP 1.3 million (~USD 1.45 million) in revenue in 2022 and GBP 45 million (~USD 50.4 million) by 2025 amidst growing demand for microplastic reduction.
