 <p>The Federal Trade Commission (FTC) has imposed a fine of USD 16.5 million on antivirus provider Avast for privacy violations linked to unauthorized sale of customer data to ad companies and data brokers. The company has been additionally prohibited from selling customer data from its Avast-branded products in the future.</p>
 <p>As reported, Avast, which is based in the UK, sold data regarding the browsing habits of its customers through its defunct Czech subsidiary, Jumpshot. This data was sold to over 100 entities from 2014 to 2020. According to the FTC, Avast collected this data via browser extensions claiming to shield users from online trackers and cookies.</p>
