Do Good Foods

Based in New Jersey and launched in October 2021, Do Good Foods is a meat producer that upcycles surplus food from grocery stores and supermarkets for use as nutrient-dense animal feed. The company was co-founded by members of Kamine Development Corporation, a US-based company with over 40 years’ experience in smart technologies and ideas.   In June 2023, the company filed for Chapter 11 bankruptcy in the US state of Delaware.

The company had unveiled its first product “Do Good Chicken” in October 2021, set to be produced at its first production facility in Pennsylvania. The chicken is said to be “sustainable” as it is fed the upcycled feed produced by the company. The plant can reportedly process 160 tons of surplus food to churn out feed for 25 million chickens per year. The facility receives surplus food from around 450 supermarkets located close to the facility. 

The company previously revealed that the product will be available for purchase at supermarkets and other food service locations in the US by January 2022. As of April 2023, the product is available in major US grocery stores such as Albertsons, GIANT stores, Inserra Supermarket, and Morton Williams. The company also entered partnerships for the supply of its Do Good Chicken to restaurants and catering companies Carroll Couture Cuisine and Spice Finch, respectively, and UK-based contract foodservice company Compass Group . As of April 2023, the company works with over 200 surplus food collection partners for necessary feedstock. 

According to Do Good Foods, the upcycled feed will save around four lbs of food waste for every chicken. As of April 2023, the company has prevented around 27 million lbs of surplus food from going to landfills. It plans to build 2 similar facilities by 2025 and further expand its product range beyond chicken.

It was reported in October 2021 that global asset manager Nuveen had invested USD 169 million in the organization. Do Good Food used the funding to build its production facility and facilitate the launch of its new product.
