Gander is a British startup that operates an automated real-time mobile app to track and purchase “reduced to clear” items from retail stores. The app automatically connects to a store’s point-of-sale account, inputs the respective short-dated items to the app, and removes the items from the app once they are sold. As of 2024, the company reports having reached 100,000 downloads and saved a total of 32.9 million food items from 2019 to Q1 2024 from being discarded.
Gander reports that it allows customers to save an average of 56% every time they shop via its app and also claims to be the first app directing customers to stickered goods that indicate that they are reaching the “best before” date. The company claimed that it had saved 34,700 tons of CO2 emissions from 2019 to Q1 2024.
