Exxon Mobil (NYSE: XOM) is one of the big five oil and gas companies. Headquartered in Texas, it is the largest energy company in the US (according to 2023 revenue) and one of the world's largest integrated refiners, petroleum product marketers, and chemical manufacturers. Its business involves the exploration and production of crude oil and natural gas, along with the manufacturing, trading, transportation, and sale of a diverse portfolio that includes oil, natural gas, petroleum products, petrochemicals, and various specialty products. In 2023, Exxon produced 3.7 million oil-equivalent barrels (boe) per day. In 2024, Exxon was third on the Fortune 500 list and generated USD 335 billion in revenue in 2023.

Exxon operates through four main segments: 1) the Upstream segment encompasses the exploration and extraction of crude oil, natural gas liquids, bitumen, and synthetic oil; 2) the Energy Products segment works across the entire fuels value chain, bringing together fuels and aromatics value chains; 3) the Chemical Products segment manufactures and markets petrochemicals; and 4) the Specialty Products segment provides performance products that help improve efficiency in the transportation and industrial sectors. Exxon is organized along three businesses—Upstream, Product Solutions (includes Energy Products, Chemical Products, and Specialty Products), and Low-carbon Solutions (included in corporate and financing), aligning with market-focused value chains.

Exxon’s primary country of operation was the US, accounting for ~38% of its 2023 revenue. The company aims to expand its conventional oil and gas operations, reduce the carbon intensity of its activities, and support new, environmentally-friendly ventures in carbon capture and storage (CCUS), hydrogen, Mobil™ Lithium, second-generation biofuels, and other emerging technologies. It plans to more than double its earnings between 2019 and 2025 and grow an additional 25% between 2025 and 2027.
