Smallfood, based in Canada, is a microbial ingredient startup, which focuses on alternative meat and dairy space. The startup leverages its biomass fermentation technology to cultivate microalgae in a production time of seven days, compared to 7-9 months for plant-based proteins, and years for beef protein. The company claims to have tested over 20,000 different microorganisms, before finding a strain of microalgae to produce its protein called the “Perfect Protein”. Smallfood states the protein has a complete amino acid profile, soluble, digestible, free from allergens, and non-GMO.
In May 2022 , the company developed a new marine-based whole food ingredient that claimed to offer a high protein content and an amino acid profile similar to beef along with significant amounts of the coveted long-chain omega-3 fatty acids EPA and DHA. According to the company, the component can be used to improve protein and omega-3 levels in seafood alternatives while adding a subtle seafood flavor.
Funding and financials
Smallfood has raised a total of CAD 20 million (USD 15.7 million) through private investments and government grants, which were utilized for R&D.
