Onfido

London-based Onfido provides virtual identity verification solutions. The company’s technology uses AI to read a person’s identity documents, and, based on facial recognition, verifies that the person present online is the person they claim to be. In online payments, for example, Onfido's technology helps verify that the person making the transaction is the owner of the document, helping to reduce the use of stolen cards. To do this, the payee has to take and submit a selfie or a short video, which is also checked for liveness. Onfido's product can be used in various scenarios where identity verification is required, such as KYC, driver registration, user onboarding, and age verification and is currently used in many industries such as financial services, gaming, transportation, retail, healthcare, and telecommunications. In October 2021, with the acquisition of biometric identity verification solutions provider EYN, the company added acoustic facial liveness detection technology, which uses ultrasound signals through the phone's speaker to detect whether it is a live person or someone trying to impersonate (spoof) a photo or video playback. In May 2023, the company also acquired Airside, a developer of digital identity sharing technology, to expand its product offering.

In February 2024, Entrust, a provider of identity-based security software and services, was in discussions to acquire Onfido in order to integrate Onfido's identity verification methods, such as AI-driven biometric and document IDV technology, into its range of identity solutions. The acquisition was completed in April 2024.

As of November 2024, the company was used by over 1,000 global businesses, including Revolut, Millennium Bank, Union Bank, and Deliveroo.
