North Carolina-based Plantd converts renewable grass into building materials for residential homes. The structural building panels produced by the company are used for wall sheathing, roof decking, and subflooring. The company claims that Plantd materials are stronger, lighter, more moisture-resistant, and carbon-negative.
Plantd cultivates the fastest-growing perennial grasses, which are then transformed into durable building material using automated, low-emission, low-cost production technology. The company claims that its proprietary technology can improve building material quality by nine times. The company was in the prototyping phase as of October 2021, using a lab in Durham, and the company launched its product in 2023.
Key customers and partnerships
In June 2023, the company partnered with US-based homebuilder D.R. Horton to sell 250,000 structural panels for wall sheathing and roof decking to be installed in over 1,000 new single-family houses, starting in North Carolina.
Funding and financials
In January 2023, Plantd raised nearly USD 13.6 million in a combination of both equity and debt financing, including shares of Series A convertible preferred stock with the participation of 31 investors for its growth.
