Estonia-based ProProtein is an alternative dairy startup that uses precision fermentation of yeast to develop the four main types of proteins in casein. The startup uses synthetic biology to develop yeast strains that synthesize dairy proteins. These can be used to make animal-free products such as cheese and yogurt.
ProProtein claimed its technology required 98% less water and 65% less energy than conventional dairy protein, while its production can take place anywhere, including in urbanized areas. The company also noted that its protein is free from cholesterol, antibiotics, and hormones, which makes it suitable for consumers with lactose intolerance. ProProtein has plans to launch initially in North America and Canada.
Funding and financials
In March 2022, the startup initiated a seed funding round aiming to raise EUR 700,000 (~USD 761,648) to develop a scalable precision fermentation platform.
