Founded in 2021, Brown Foods has a presence in the US and in India. The company uses mammalian cell culture technology to manufacture its debut product “UnReal Milk,” which is a cultivated real whole milk. The Y Combinator Winter 2022 alum claims that it is the first company in the US to produce lab-made cow’s milk. The company also claims that its cell-cultured milk closely resembles cow milk and can be converted into different dairy products such as butter, cheese, and ice cream. The production of UnReal Milk is estimated to have a 90% smaller carbon footprint compared to the production of conventional dairy, according to the company.
Funding and financials
In June 2022 , the company raised USD 2.36 million in a seed funding round that included the participation of Y Combinator, AgFunder, and SRI Capital. It planned to use the funds to develop and scale up the cell cultivation bioprocess. The process was expected to begin in 2023.
