Stora Enso Oyj (HEL: STERV) is a leading global provider of renewable solutions in packaging, biomaterials, wooden construction, and paper. The company was formed in 1998 through the merger of the Finnish company Enso and the Swedish company STORA, with roots dating back to 1288.

Stora Enso's main products and services include:

  • Packaging materials and solutions for food, beverages, and consumer goods

  • Biomaterials like lignin-based products for various industries

  • Wood products for sustainable construction

  • Pulp for paper, packaging, and textile applications

  • Forest management services

The company is transforming from a traditional paper and board producer to a renewable materials growth company focused on packaging, biomaterials, and wooden construction solutions. Stora Enso aims to replace fossil-based materials with renewable alternatives made from wood and other biomass.

In January 2023, Stora Enso announced plans to invest EUR 1 billion to convert its Oulu paper mill in Finland to produce renewable packaging materials, with an annual capacity of 750,000 tonnes when completed in 2025. The company is also developing innovative products like lignin-based battery materials and formed fiber packaging to replace single-use plastics. Stora Enso collaborates with startups and other partners to drive innovation in renewable materials. With approximately 21,000 employees across 35 countries as of 2023, Stora Enso reported sales of EUR 11.7 billion in 2022.
