Founded in 2020, Wasted, a Burlington, Vermont-based company, collects human waste from portable toilets and converts it into fertilizer via a nutrient-recovery process. Wasted's porta-potties, which cost USD 200, are a type of "container-based sanitation." Solid waste from the retrofitted porta-potties are transported to a nearby Williston facility and processed into a nitrogen-rich fertilizer to reduce phosphorus run-off.
The company had plans to expand into a second city in 2024. In addition, the company intended to tailor its fertilizer to local needs, and, as of February 2023, had filed a patent for a toilet that could separate liquids from solids. Wasted is also interested in other venues with portable toilets, such as camping grounds, concerts, and outdoor events.
In January 2023 , Wasted raised USD 7.5 million in seed funding from various investors, including Collaborative Fund, Divergent Capital, and Day One Ventures, for the company's pilot program that involved 200 porta-potties on construction sites in Burlington, Vermont.
