Matchday combines video games, sports, and Web3. It was incubated by Play Time, the venture capital company of Lionel Messi. The company builds games for football fans featuring officially licensed players and tournaments, in partnership with FIFA and FIFPRO. Users participate by buying, trading, and collecting officially licensed digital player cards in the form of NFTs to manage a virtual team to compete against others in friendly matches or tournaments.
Funding and financials
Matchday raised USD 21 million in a seed funding round in March 2023, which saw participation from Courtside Ventures, Greylock, HackVC, Capricorn Investment Group, and Horizons Ventures. It planned to funnel the fresh funds to develop a suite of Web3-based football games.
