Founded in 2021, Karman+ is a company focused on near-earth asteroid mining for energy and resources. The company was initially headquartered in the Netherlands and relocated to Denver, Colorado in November 2022. As opposed to other space mining companies whose initial goal is mineral and metal mining, Karman+ had plans to begin with mining for water. The company plans to kickstart a flywheel of cis-lunar economy, where each mission builds upon and enables future missions. It also aims to create a self-sustaining feedback loop for its extraction operations to reduce costs and limit the number of earth to space launches.
As of 2024, Karman expected to launch its first mission, ‘High Frontier,’ in 2026. The mission does not yet have a finalized near-Earth asteroid target but it will analyze the water content and physical composition of the target, and test its excavation equipment for asteroid mining.
