Tempo (formerly known as Pivot) is a startup that develops fitness devices that assist in strength training and other exercises. Prior to the introduction of Tempo, the company launched SmartSpot in 2015 to focus on power gyms. SmartSpot was a predecessor to Tempo with a similar motion-tracking application to correct the form and technique in strength training. Similar to SmartSpot, Tempo is equipped with a large screen that has built-in 3D motion sensors and artificial intelligence (AI) to capture movement patterns and range and make suggestions in a manner similar to that of a human trainer. Tempo devices can also be integrated with Apple Watch. Besides the device, Tempo includes a kettlebell system, a barbell, and two dumbbells that can be adjusted in weight. Its devices are available in three packages: Tempo “Starter,” “Plus,” and “Pro,” with varying prices that range between USD 2,495 and USD 3,995 based on added weights and equipment. Besides strength training, users can take high-intensity interval training (HIIT) and mobility classes on-demand or live, available for USD 39 per month.
In November 2021, Tempo introduced “Tempo Move,” a cheaper modular home gym solution that can be connected with iPhones and home TVs for a connected fitness experience. Tempo Move consists of a two-foot-high storage container that comes with 50 lbs of weight plates and dumbbells (additional weights can be purchased separately). It uses technology in the iPhone to count reps and provide form feedback during workouts. Users can access live and on-demand workout content including strength, yoga, meditation, cardio, and HIIT exercises.
In August 2022, Tempo introduced an all-access membership program with one-on-one online fitness coaching priced at USD 59 per month, which also includes its Tempo Move home gym.
Funding and financials
Tempo reported 10x sales growth and zero subscriber churn in 2020. In April 2021, the company raised USD 220 million in a Series C funding round led by Softbank Vision Fund 2, bringing the total raised to almost USD 300 million to date. Tempo will use the new capital for the continued enhancement of its AI and 3D sensor technology.
