Based in the Netherlands, PlantLab develops and operates hydroponic vertical farms called “Plant Production Units” (PPU) to grow crops such as salads leaves, vegetables, and herbs and uses its “Plant Paradise” control software to optimize growing conditions such as lighting, moisture, and temperature. Its custom-built production facilities can be located anywhere in the world, with patents for its vertical farming technology being granted in more than 70 countries. Using this patented technology, the company has plans to open production locations in the Netherlands, the US, and the Bahamas among others.
As of February 2022, PlantLab operates 3 vertical farming facilities across 3 countries: one in Amsterdam (1,600,000+ sq ft), one in Indianapolis, US (54,000 sq ft), and one in the Bahamas (area undisclosed). The company produces salad leaves, vegetables, herbs, tomatoes, and cucumbers and reported that the Amsterdam facility can supply a city of 100,000 residents with 200g fresh vegetables every day.
Funding and financials
In February 2022, PlantLab announced that it had raised EUR 50 million (USD 56.1 million) in a funding round led by De Hoge Dennen Capital. The funds would support the company’s expansion to North America and Europe, where it plans to open new production facilities.
