PetCo is a pet retailer that sells pet food and other supplies. The company also offers veterinary services, pet grooming, dog training, adoptions, and pet insurance. In April 2017, PetCo acquired PetCoach, a digital services company that connects pet owners with veterinarians, to add digital pet health services to its offerings.
Additionally, PetCo operated full-service hospitals and vaccination clinics for pets, providing wellness and preventive care, routine care, surgeries, and dental care. Petco formed a strategic joint venture with Thrive Pet Healthcare, a veterinary service provider, in May 2017 to launch full-service veterinary hospitals under the THRIVE brand in Petco pet care centers. In March 2022, Petco acquired the remaining 50% stake in its pet hospital joint venture, allowing the company to expand its hospital brand “Vetco Total Care'' nationally and hire 800+ veterinary care professionals to join its network of 27,000+ employees. In addition, the THRIVE ~100 full-service veterinary hospitals in 14 states will be rebranded as Vetco Total Care. As of March 2022, PetCo operated in more than 1,500 locations in the US, Mexico, and Puerto Rico, including a network of more than 150 in-store veterinary hospitals.
In September 2021, PetCo announced an expanded product offering as part of its monthly PupBox subscription service, which would tailor the contents of the boxes (e.g. curated toys, treats) to the life stage of the dog. It is also expected to provide guidance to pet owners that is customized to factors such as their dog’s age, weight, and gender.
