Finland-based Distance Technologies, founded by the creators of Varjo, offers an XR platform that turns any transparent surface into a mixed-reality window. It uses computer-generated 3D light fields to offer glasses-free immersion, backed by a high per-pixel optical depth capability. The content showcased can include information unique to a specific location or coordinates and can be tied into a range of large language models (LLMs) and search engines.

In June 2024, the company showcased a prototype version of its product. It featured an LCD panel that projects a transparent image onto a windshield with a reflective coating. Similar to a glasses-free 3D monitor, the prototype's large LCD panel, equipped with a parallax barrier, displays slightly different images to each eye. Tracking cameras adjust the image based on the driver's gaze. This creates a clear, large screen displaying everything from standard HUD elements like speedometers to detailed 3D visuals. It supports voice and gesture controls and is connected to an Ultraleap hand tracker, enabling drivers to interact with notifications without looking away from the road.

However, The Verge noted that its eye-tracking system faces significant challenges. High latency causes image redraw delays, leading to instability during motion. The sensors easily lose eye tracking, particularly when the driver looks away, has long hair, or wears a hat, resulting in distorted lines on the windshield. Future features might use lidar or other sensors for advanced AR, such as placing virtual signs in the environment or enhancing night vision. In aviation, the display could project 3D topographic maps in the cockpit, eliminating the need for headsets or eyepieces.

Key customers and partnerships

The company’s technology is designed for integration into automotive and aeronautics systems, having been evaluated by automotive OEMs for use in windows and windshields, and defense contractors for use in military cockpits and vehicles. Further, the company expected future design generations to open up new market opportunities for it.
