Meow Wolf creates large-scale location-based immersive art installations that include XR experiences. The exhibits allow users to create their own adventures by engaging in puzzles, games, projections, and Radio-Frequency Identification (RFID) technology that unlocks hidden storylines as users move within the premises. The company first announced research on PC-based VR and AR implementations that make use of haptic feedback and custom RGB-D (depth-sensing) AR devices in January 2017. It has also focused on production methods that are approachable to non-digital artists by using 3D scanning and animating techniques to allow its wide network of artists including painters, architects, sculptors, performers, and writers to create and pilot their 3D objects and characters using motion capture suits. Furthermore, Meow Wolf has incorporated 4D elements such as wind generation, bass transducers, and smell into its VR exhibits.
As of May 2024, Meow Wolf operated across 6 locations: Los Angeles, Grapevine, Denver, Santa Fe, Las Vegas and Houston. The company charges USD 40–64 per ticket for general admission to its installations, and also generates revenue via sales of apparel items (priced between USD 20-100).
In May 2024, Meow Wolf laid off ~18% of its staff (165 of its 911 employees), as the company sought to reduce its expenses by 10%.
