Netherlands-based VirtuWalk is the developer of a VR treadmill system, which allows users to experience the sensation of walking within virtual environments while remaining stationary in the real world. The company announced the launch of the VirtuWalk system (October 2024), which includes a treadmill, navigation handlebar, and VR headset, priced between EUR 35,000 and EUR 40,000 (~USD 38,000 and ~USD 44,000). Potential customers can experience a demo of the system at the company's offices in Utrecht, the Netherlands.
The system notably features a patented handlebar that enables users to navigate around corners and move freely in a 360-degree space. An optional curved screen and computer are provided to enhance user experience, with safety features in place to stop the treadmill if a user steps off.
The company's origins trace back to 2015 when its founders created an analog VR treadmill that simulated the experience of a blind person walking with a guide dog through Amsterdam's busiest street. Building on this concept, they developed the fully interactive VirtuWalk.
