San Francisco-based Hinge Health is a B2B specialized telehealth provider offering physical therapy and behavioral health solutions for back and joint pain (chronic musculoskeletal-MSK) conditions. The company was the first to launch a Digital MSK Clinic that combines guided one-on-one therapy with wearable motion sensors to provide real-time feedback and allow users to track their progress.
Hinge’s product offering covers the full spectrum of MSK care, from prevention to post-surgical recovery, with access to virtual physical therapists and health coaches. Following the acquisition of Canada-based computer vision platform, Wrnch in September 2021, the company will offer a more personalized MSK care offering by motion tracking.
As of January 2023, the company has served over 1,250 companies including Verizon, Volvo, and Salesforce.
In April 2022, the company launched a new solution for women’s pelvic health during all stages of life including pregnancy, postpartum, and menopause.
In January 2023, the company launched a new house-call physical therapy service. The service allows patients to schedule appointments via Hinge Health’s app, securing an at-home visit from a physical therapist between one and two business days. The appointments last for 45 minutes and aim to assess patients’ physical ability, flexibility, strength, and balance. Physical therapists will also carry out fall risk assessments of patients’ homes.
In April 2024, the company announced a 10% cut in its workforce. The move was an effort to accelerate the firm's path to profitability, enhance decision-making processes, and optimize investment focus as it braces for an IPO. The layoffs affected roles from various departments, including engineering. Prior to the decision, the company had more than 1,700 employees.
Key customers and partnerships
In October 2023, General telemedicine provider Teladoc Health partnered with Hinge Health to provide Teladoc's clients with access to a range of digital solutions for joint and muscle pain for their employees. Under its partnership with Hinge Health, Teladoc’s clients could access its digital physical therapy program, which aims to reduce MSK pain and minimize the need for opioids and surgery. The program was personalized and supported by a multidisciplinary care team.
Funding and financials
In October 2021, Hinge raised USD 400 million in Series E funding and USD 200 million from the secondary market, which brought total funds to more than USD 1 billion. This nearly doubled Hinge’s valuation to USD 6.2 billion, since its Series D funding round in January 2021. The funds will be used to enhance its technology, for product development, and to hire more employees.
