France-based Atawey designs and manufactures green hydrogen refueling stations for hydrogen fuel cell vehicles. The company’s patented water electrolysis technology, integrated into hydrogen refueling stations, allows hydrogen to be produced on-site from electricity and water. In addition to these self-contained stations, the company also offers transfer stations that deliver hydrogen from external dispensers. Stations are available in three configurations: 1) evolutive stations for the heavy and light mobility markets with capacities ranging from 100 kg/day to 1.3 t/day; 2) mobile stations for testing, demonstration, and temporary applications (launched in September 2021); and 3) compact stations that can supply a maximum of 100 kg/day and up to 60 kg daily.
As of February 2024, Atawey had 25 hydrogen fueling stations and plans to operate 150 stations by 2025. With the expansion, the company believes it could capture 40% of the country’s hydrogen station by 2025.
In March 2023, Atawey integrated the more complex international fueling protocol, MC Formula, into all its evolutive stations. In June 2023, Atawey launched two new automated diagnostic software programs for its stations: ata’START (which guides the technician in searching for any faults or malfunctions in the station’s components) and ata’CHECK (which performs an automated daily test of all the hydrogen circuits in a station, allowing the early detection of leaks and deviations).
In December 2023, the company entered into negotiations with McPhy Energy to acquire its hydrogen refueling station business which would allow Atawey to expand its European presence.
Key customers and partnerships
In June 2021, Atawey partnered with Ergosup to develop the “ATAWEY-ERGOSUP Inside” station and provide hydrogen mobility for cars, bicycles, and other emerging light applications.
In September 2023, HYVIA, a joint venture between the Renault Group and Plug focused on hydrogen mobility, announced that it had chosen Atawey to co-develop a new hydrogen refueling station called “HYWELL by HYVIA”. The station has a hydrogen distribution capacity of 100 kg/day and can refuel 20–25 vehicles. In July 2023, the company concluded a partnership with Technogas, a provider of pressure reduction and metering stations for the gas network, to offer a turnkey solution for the BeNeLux region, with Atawey providing hydrogen refueling stations and Technogas providing maintenance and technical operations.
Funding and financials
The company’s most recent funding was in December 2022, when it received EUR 15 million (USD 16 million) from the “Industrial and Deeptech Startups.” The funds were earmarked for the construction of 60 green hydrogen filling stations per year, starting in 2025. In June 2016, Atawey raised EUR 800,000 (USD 900,000) from the Starquest investment fund. In February 2021, the company announced plans to raise additional funds to support expansion, develop a new manufacturing site, and increase workforce from 30 employees to 150 by 2025.
