Finless Foods is a startup using cell culture technology to grow seafood. The startup uses extracted fish cells to cultivate muscle and fat cells in a bioreactor filled with serum-free media. Finless Foods plans to develop cell-cultured Bluefin tuna meat first and other seafood such as sea urchin, eel, and pufferfish later.
In June 2021, the company unveiled a sushi-grade cell-cultured tuna product and was working toward gaining regulatory approval to launch the product in foodservice spaces across the US, Japan, China, and Singapore.
Funding and financials
In March 2022 , Finless Foods raised USD 34 million in Series B funding led by Hanwha Solutions. The funds were earmarked for launching plant-based tuna in US foodservice, gaining approval for cell-cultured Bluefin tuna, and expanding its R&D team.
