UK-based Oxford Quantum Circuits (OQC), spun out of the University of Oxford, uses superconducting technology to develop quantum computers. The company’s proprietary quantum bit “Coaxman” uses a 3D architecture that simplifies fabrication, improves coherence, and boosts scalability.

OQC claims to be the “first in the UK” on several fronts including 1) building UK’s first and only commercial quantum computer in 2018, 2) building the UK's first and only commercially available quantum laboratory in 2020, 3) releasing the UK's first commercially available quantum-computer-as-a-service platform (QCaaS) in July 2021. It is also reportedly the first European quantum company to offer its systems on Amazon Braket, following the launch of its latest system Lucy in February 2022. The QCaaS platform was developed solely using its proprietary technologies and will be available to enterprises via OQC’s private cloud.

Key customers and partnerships

OQC has formed partnerships with universities and other quantum computing companies such as Riverlane and Cambridge Quantum Computing (CQC). The company is also part of the consortium founded by Riverlane for the purpose of building a quantum operating system, which was awarded a GBP 7.6 million (USD 10.5 million) grant from the UK Government as part of its “Industrial Challenge Strategy” fund. CQC will be the first user of the QCaaS platform to demonstrate its IronBridge cybersecurity platform and will be given access to OQC’s 4-qubit quantum computer “Sophia.”

In December 2023, the company partnered with Classiq to simplify the adoption and execution of advanced quantum computing across industries and research fields. In July 2023, Q-CTRL and OQC partnered to improve algorithmic performance of quantum computers to assist quantum developers, researchers, and end users in solving complex problems.

Funding and financials

In November 2023, OQC raised USD 100 million in a Series B funding round led by Japan's SBI Investment. The funds were allocated toward the company’s R&D activities to achieve quantum advantage and deliver next-level quantum computing platforms with hundreds of qubits to global companies.
