Acronis is a spinoff of the virtualization company Parallels. The company started as a provider of data recovery and backup solutions in 2003, gradually expanding to provide an all-in-one solution, “Acronis Cyber Protect.” In addition to its backup and data recovery offerings, the product also includes next-generation endpoint security offerings that feature the use of AI and behavioral detection to identify malware. The product saw 100% growth in revenue during the Covid-19 pandemic. Overall, the company serves 500,000 businesses of varying sizes in more than 150 countries. As of May 2021, Acronis was looking at a liquidity event over the next 12 to 24 months, which could potentially include a listing or a sale.
Over the years, the company has engaged in a spree of acquisitions for undisclosed amounts, with the most recent including Synapsis, a South African cybersecurity distributor, to bolster its distribution capabilities in the region; Cyberlinx, a cybersecurity consultancy firm that will enable Acronis to expand its security evaluation offerings; DeviceLock, an endpoint data loss prevention software provider; and Nyotron to expand its cybersecurity offerings with endpoint detection and response (EDR) capabilities. In July 2021, Acronis began offering managed services providers MSPs with cyber solutions to protect their clients' Microsoft environments. In 2021, the company partnered with Jamf, a software solution provider for enterprise device management for Apple products, to deploy Acronis Cyber Protect Cloud for MSPs managing macOS devices on the Jamf platform.
Over 2021, Acronis established a new office in Israel for cybersecurity R&D. The company plans to invest around USD 80 million (NIS 260 million) over the next five years and recruit more than 100 cybersecurity professionals for the new location.
