Urban Mining Corp (also known as Umincorp) is a Dutch-based plastic recycling company that offers waste sorting and recycling technologies. Its patented-technology Magnetic Density Separation (MDS) separates rigid plastic packaging and converts them into polypropylene (PP), high-density polyethylene (HDPE), and polyethylene terephthalate (PET) to be sold as feedstock to plastic producers. Umincorp also has its in-house production of flakes, yarns, and ferrofluids made from recycled waste. The company claims its process recovers 90% of the plastic and is 75% more cost-effective than current recycling methods.
As of March 2024, Umincorp operates two recycling facilities: one in Amsterdam processing 25,000 tons of post-household plastic waste per year, and another in Rotterdam handling 36,000 tons of PET bottles per year.
In January 2024, Umincorp declared bankruptcy by terminating the suspension of payments and closing the Rotterdam facility.
Key customers and partnerships
In early 2021, Umincorp entered a long-term EPC (engineering, procurement, and construction) partnership with industrial services provider Bilfinger to build new recycling facilities.
Funding and financials
In October 2022, the company raised USD 5 million in debt financing from Nationaal Groenfonds to support the construction of the Rotterdam plant.
