Based in the UK, Breedr offers a livestock management platform that uses predictive analytics to transform data such as genetics, weight, health, and medication into actionable insights to help farmers grow and manage cattle. Data can be recorded digitally on smartphones via a semi-automated process using integrated sensors or tags or can be entered manually. Breedr also offers a livestock trading marketplace that integrates its data platform to provide better transparency to buyers on the animals sold and allows sellers to charge higher prices. Breedr has also launched a new product “Breedr Cashflow,” a financing facility for farmers, where they can borrow using their livestock as collateral.
The company also claims that by using its platform, its top customers can make precise feeding decisions to prevent overfeeding and feed wastage and produce beef with a 28% lower carbon footprint compared to the industry average. Farmers using Breedr are also claimed to save 1.8 tons of feed per cow and reduce finishing time (the process of feeding cattle to prepare them for slaughter) by 5 months.
The platform comes in both free and paid versions. The paid version, “Benchmark,” costs GBP 29.5/month and comes with additional features such as management of both cattle and sheep, onboarding support, and phone support services. Farmers using the free version will automatically upgrade to Benchmark for free if they trade 20 animals. Breedr also generates its revenue from its trading platform by charging sellers a service fee of 1%–3% of the selling price. As of March 2022, Breedr had registered 160,000 animals, is used by 1,100 farms, and had traded 6,000 animals recording GBP 4.5 million (USD 5.91 million) in transactions completed (from January 2021).
Breedr has also integrated its platform with Cattle Tracing Systems (CTS) such as British Cattle Movement Services (BCMS) in the UK and ScotEID in Scotland to allow farmers trace their cattle across the supply chain by entering information such as birth date.
In March 2022, Breedr raised GBP 12 million (~USD 15.8 million) in Series A funding led by Investbridge Capital. The funds would support the launch of its new finance product.
