Based in California, VitroLabs offers cell-cultured leather using a process that involves growing animal hide in a bioreactor using stem cells from cows. The harvested material does not need any additional processing and can directly go into the tanning process. The company claims that its cultivated leather has the same look, feel, and performance as traditional animal leather.
Although the company has not yet commercialized its product, it has made progress in terms of product quality by optimizing its cell-growth process and using a proprietary novel design for its large-scale tissue cultivator. The company had moved into a 45,000 sq ft facility toward the end of 2021 for pilot production and commercialization (capacity level undisclosed). VitroLabs is also reportedly partnering with popular brands to create leather products from its cultivated leather material.
Funding and financials
In May 2022 , the company raised USD 46 million in a Series A funding round led by Agronomics for commercialization and expansion purposes. Investors including luxury goods manufacturer Kering and celebrity Leonardo DiCaprio also joined the round.
