Singularity 6 (acquired by Daybreak in July 2024) is the game developer behind Palia, a free-to-play community simulation massively multiplayer online game (MMOG) where users can build a home and interact with other players in an evolving narrative and world. The game, which is not primarily focused on combat, has a range of virtual activities such as fishing, foraging, hunting, mining, cooking, furniture making and gardening that can be performed collaboratively. Users can also interact with village non-playable characters (NPCs) who provide quests for players to complete.
As of January 2024, Palia was in open beta. The game was available on the Nintendo Switch, and PC, with the company subsequently launching Palia on the Epic Games store in October 2023. In April 2024, the company laid off 35% of its staff, which was followed by another round of layoffs in May 2024, which saw the departure of 36 staff members (~40% of total headcount).
The company generates revenue via the sale of in-game currency, with prices ranging from USD 5-100 based on quantity purchased. The virtual currency can be used by players to purchase digital cosmetics for their characters.
Key customers and partnerships
As of March 2024, Palia recorded over 3 million players, rising from 270,000 in August 2023, given strong player interest on the Nintendo Switch console, attributed to its portability.
Funding and financials
In July 2021, Singularity 6 raised USD 30 million in a Series B funding round led by FunPlus Ventures with participation from a16z and other investors. Funding proceeds were used to develop its game, Palia.
