Dutch startup, Mollie, offers infrastructure for merchants to integrate one-time and recurring payments to their online channels via an application programming interface (API). The company mainly caters to three types of customers; 1) SaaS, 2) digital agencies, and 3) ecommerce merchants/platforms. In addition to the payment infrastructure, Mollie also offers “Mollie Capital,” a solution to improve funding access for SMBs.

The platform supports a range of local and international payment methods, including credit cards, PayPal, Klarna, and iDEAL, among others. Unlike payment infrastructure peers Stripe and Adyen, Mollie focuses on providing more localized services and complex compliance checks that primarily cater to small and medium businesses (SMBs).

Mollie can be integrated with a range of third-party apps and tools, including CRM, accounting, invoicing, and ticketing products. It can also be integrated with webshops such as Shopify, enabling merchants of popular ecommerce platforms to seamlessly implement Mollie’s payment infrastructure.

The platform charges on a per transaction basis, which consists of a standard fee per transaction and a percentage of the transaction value, which varies by payment method handled. It also offers volume pricing for enterprises that process over EUR 50,000 monthly.

Key customers and partnerships

Mollie partnered with subscription management solutions provider Recharge, in April 2022, to offer recurring payment and subscription management solutions.

As of June 2021, the company had around 120,000 monthly active merchants including Deliveroo, Unicef, Acer, and Guess, and reported to be adding around 500 customers per day. The company, which primarily operates in the EU, expanded to the UK in February 2021 to enable British merchants to incorporate EU payment methods into their stores.

Funding and financials

Mollie processed around EUR 10 billion (USD 12 billion) in payments in 2020 and expects to double that figure in 2021.

In June 2021, Mollie raised EUR 665 million (USD 800 million) in a Series C funding round led by Blackstone Growth at a EUR 5.4 billion valuation (USD 6.5 billion). The company expects to invest the funds in recruitment, expanding its international presence (in Europe and new regions such as Asia and Latin America), and building complementary services into its payment infrastructures such as card issuing and corporate card programs, expense management tools, and working capital solutions.
