Germany-based HQS Quantum Simulations is a quantum software startup spun out of the Karlsruhe Institute of Technology (KIT) in 2017. It develops quantum simulation software solutions for researchers and academics in the materials science field. The company reports that its solutions enable researchers to transition seamlessly from a conventional computer to a quantum computer, potentially accelerating industry adoption of quantum computing.
The company’s offerings include 1) bespoke simulation software and a software workflow that enables chemical companies to analyze material properties to the quantum level; 2) cloud-based toolbox “Quantum Assisted Design Cloud” (launched in 2020) that equips scientists with easy quantum simulation, along with the support of a subject-matter expert with a Ph.D.; and 3) open-source software, including its quantum computing library qoqo, and Active Space Finder (reportedly the first-of-its-kind active space solution in the world).
HQS was also part of the Q-Exa consortium that aimed to build Germany’s first locally manufactured quantum computer in 2022.
Key customers and partnerships
In April 2020, the company partnered Alpine Quantum Technologies (AQT) to leverage its combined expertise in quantum computing hardware and software.
Funding and financials
In its latest Series A funding round in January 2022, it raised EUR 12 million (USD 13 million) bringing the company’s total funds raised to date to USD 16 million.
