Alpine Bio (formerly Nobell Foods prior to April 2024) is a plant-based cheese startup based in the US. The startup has developed a proprietary method that allows it to recreate the genetic code of casein in soybean seeds and grow plants with the same dairy casein. Using plant-derived casein, it can create cheese, such as mozzarella, with similar stretch, melt, and mouth-feel.
In April 2024, the company acquired its 10th US patent, covering dairy food compositions containing plant-expressed recombinant casein proteins. This method aims to replicate traditional dairy products using plant systems to improve production efficiency and cost-effectiveness. Moreover, the company plans to debut its animal-free mozzarella cheese on the market by 2025.
Funding and financials
In its latest funding round in July 2021, Nobell Foods raised USD 75 million in a Series B funding round with participation from Bill Gates-backed Breakthrough Energy Ventures, Andreessen Horowitz, and Robert Downey Jr.’s FootPrint Coalition Ventures. The latest round brings the total funding raised by the startup to USD 100 million. The company plans to use the funds to expand its team and partnerships with farms. Nobell Foods also plans to invest part of the funds to scale its production while preparing to commercialize its first products over the next two years. In addition, it plans to initially supply foodservice companies, focusing on pizza chains and later retail channels.
