SQIM (formerly known as Mogu SRL) is an Italian biomaterials company using microbial fermentation of fungal mycelium combined with vertical farming for mycelium-based solutions. SQIM's product portfolio includes two main brands, EPHEA and MOGU. EPHEA is a mycelium-based leather alternative targeting the fashion and automotive industries, while MOGU focuses on interior design and architecture, namely acoustic panels and flooring systems.
SQIM claims Mogu Acoustic products are the first commercially available products of their kind, made from fungal mycelium and upcycled textile waste. Mogu Floor offers resilient flooring systems for interior design using upcycled agro-industrial residues. The company claims that 87% of its floor tiles are made from bio-based resin. EPHEA's first market launch took place at Paris Fashion Week in March 2022, where the brand unveiled an exclusive full-length coat made with EPHEA.
Key customers and partnerships
In July 2021, Mogu partnered with Arup Group to launch the Foresta Acoustic System, which claims to be the world's first mycelium acoustic panel system made from completely renewable raw materials. In November 2022, Mogu partnered with Tsunami Axis & Future Elements, a leading commercial furniture dealer, to act as the exclusive distributor of all Mogu products in the UK, Germany (excluding Bavaria), and Luxembourg.
Funding and financials
In January 2024, SQIM secured EUR 11 million (~USD 12 million) in Series A funding led by CDP Venture Capital to expand industrial operations with a new demonstration facility, accelerate R&D, and strengthen its team.
